The City of Clarkston is excited to spotlight Fresh Harvest as the November 2024 Business of the Month.
Join us in celebrating this innovative company, founded by Zac Harrison, which delivers fresh, organic produce and groceries to homes and businesses while championing sustainability, community connection, and workforce development in Clarkston since 2014.
Fresh Harvest began as an idea sparked by Zac’s visit to an organic farm in California more than a decade ago. Inspired by the deep sense of community and the connection people had under food, Zac returned home with the vision of creating Fresh Harvest. The name reflects their mission—providing fresh, organic food with a focus on sustainability and healthy living.
Like many businesses, Fresh Harvest faced its share of challenges at the beginning. Joe Spiccia, Content Director at Fresh Harvest, recalls logistical hurdles, route planning issues, and finding the right talent to help the business grow. Despite these early setbacks, the team has overcome these obstacles and continuously developed a strong presence in the metro Atlanta area. Today, their trucks can be found everywhere from Clarkston’s Market Street to Decatur, Midtown, Kirkwood, Roswell, and beyond!
Fresh Harvest is not just about delivering organic produce—it's about making a difference. Their mission includes three key principles: sustainability, health, and convenience. They believe in regenerative farming, local sourcing, reusable packaging, and minimizing food waste. Their goal is to make healthy, organic food accessible to everyone, while empowering customers to spend less time in traffic and more time with their families.
The number 100,000,000 is a significant milestone for Fresh Harvest, representing the amount of money they aim to invest in local food by 2032. This ambitious goal is driving their commitment to sustainable farming and community education, as they continue to grow and expand their reach.
Since moving to Clarkston in 2014, Fresh Harvest has become a key player in the local workforce development efforts. 70% of Fresh Harvest's staff consists of newcomers to Clarkston, providing valuable employment opportunities for residents. The company’s growth has been fueled not just by their products, but by their deep commitment to the community and creating meaningful connections with customers and partners.
Fresh Harvest also gives back through its nonprofit initiative, Share the Harvest, which provides organic food to Clarkston neighbors in need at subsidized rates. Through this program, Fresh Harvest operates three weekly markets, making fresh, healthy food more accessible to everyone in the area.
Looking toward the future, Fresh Harvest is focused on expanding their impact in Clarkston and beyond. They are dedicated to collaborating with more businesses, reducing waste, and engaging more with the community through education about the benefits of organic food and sustainable farming practices. The company’s leadership, including Zac Harrison, believes that connecting with the community and investing in people is the key to long-term success.
In addition to their work in organic food, the Fresh Harvest team enjoys supporting local businesses in Clarkston, often dining at the tasty Kathmandu Kitchen & Grill at 926 Montreal Rd E. They’re also passionate about seeing more green spaces in the city, particularly in the downtown area!
As Fresh Harvest continues to grow, their focus remains on sustainability, health, and providing high-quality, organic food to the community. Their long-term goal is to continue to create a healthier, more vibrant Georgia, one meal at a time.
Supporting local businesses like Fresh harvest is an investment in Clarkston's future. As the city continues to grow and develop, enterprises like Fresh Harvest not only foster community connections but also strengthen the local economy, ensuring a prosperous future for all!

Supporting Local this Holiday Season
As the holiday season unfolds, many of us are gearing up for celebrations, gift-giving, and family gatherings. While shopping at larger retailers and online stores is a common practice, there's something special about supporting local businesses, especially during this time of year. Shopping locally not only strengthens the local economy but also contributes to the growth and vibrancy of the community.
When you choose to spend your dollars at locally owned businesses, you're making an investment in the community. The revenue generated stays within the local economy, helping to create jobs, support schools, and fund community initiatives. This creates a ripple effect, benefiting the entire region.
The holiday season is an especially important time for local businesses to thrive. It's a time when many small businesses offer unique products, services, and experiences that large chains can't provide. From handcrafted gifts to specialized services, these businesses bring something special to the holiday shopping experience. In addition, many businesses offer promotions or seasonal events that help bring people together, encouraging a sense of community during the festive season.
Supporting local businesses isn't just about purchasing gifts; it's about supporting the livelihoods of neighbors, friends, and families. It’s a reminder of the importance of community connections and investing in the long-term health and prosperity of the area.
Holiday Traditions from Around the World: A Local Perspective
Clarkston’s diverse community reflects a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions that add to the beauty of the holiday season. Many of the holiday customs that residents celebrate come from various parts of the world, each contributing to a unique and shared experience of togetherness, joy, and generosity. Here are just a few of the holiday traditions that are common in Clarkston’s culturally diverse population:
- Middle Eastern Traditions: In many Middle Eastern cultures, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are major holiday celebrations that bring families and communities together. During these holidays, families often share large meals featuring lamb, rice, and fresh vegetables, and it is common to visit neighbors, friends, and family members to exchange gifts and well-wishes. The spirit of giving is central, with many families donating to charities or offering support to those in need.
- West African Traditions: For many West African communities in Clarkston, Kwanzaa is an important holiday celebration. Kwanzaa, which runs from December 26 to January 1, is a week-long celebration of African culture and heritage, centered around principles like unity, self-determination, and collective work. Families often decorate their homes with colorful fabrics, light the seven candles of the Kinara (candle holder), and share traditional foods such as jollof rice, fried plantains, and goat stew.
- Hispanic Traditions: For many families from Latin American backgrounds, the holiday season revolves around the celebration of Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), with large family gatherings featuring food, music, and dancing. One popular tradition is the preparation of tamales, which are made with masa (corn dough) and filled with meat, beans, or vegetables. In some families, Las Posadas, a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter, is also celebrated, involving processions, singing, and festive community events.
- Eastern European Traditions: Families with Eastern European roots in Clarkston often celebrate Orthodox Christmas on January 7th. The holiday season is filled with traditions such as fasting leading up to Christmas Eve, followed by a feast that includes a variety of meatless dishes, like borscht, pierogi (dumplings), and honey cakes. Families also attend midnight church services, reflecting on the religious significance of the holiday.
- Asian Traditions: For those from Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, the Lunar New Year (which falls between January and February) is a major celebration. It is a time to honor ancestors, enjoy family gatherings, and enjoy traditional foods like dumplings, rice cakes, and spring rolls. During the holiday, it’s common to exchange red envelopes with money for good luck in the coming year.
These diverse holiday traditions remind us that the holiday season is a time for sharing, reflection, and coming together. In Clarkston, this celebration of different customs fosters a deep sense of community, with residents finding joy in both their individual and shared experiences. Whether through food, music, or acts of kindness, the holiday season in Clarkston is a time to connect with others, embrace cultural diversity, and celebrate the bonds that unite us all.

Brockett Pub – A Neighborhood Staple for 18 Years
In the heart of Clarkston, where diverse cultures and a vibrant local economy flourish, one business has stood as a symbol of resilience, community, and growth. Brockett Pub, owned by husband-and-wife duo John and Christina Gange, first opened its doors in 2006 and has since transformed into a beloved neighborhood institution. This month, the City of Clarkston is proud to highlight Brockett Pub as part of its Business Spotlight series, celebrating its rich history, community impact, and inspiring journey.
A Dream Realized: The Birth of Brockett Pub
Before Brockett Pub became a cornerstone of Clarkston’s dining scene, the space was home to a previous establishment known as Barbra Ants. With a shared vision and entrepreneurial spirit, John and Christina took a leap of faith, reimagining the space and creating something entirely new. Their goal was simple yet profound—to build a community-centered pub where people could gather, enjoy great food, and feel at home.
“We wanted to create a place that wasn’t just about serving drinks,” John shared. “It had to be more than that. It needed to be a welcoming space where families, friends, and neighbors could come together.”
While Brockett Pub initially opened as a bar with food, it quickly evolved to meet the needs of its patrons. Today, food accounts for over 70% of its business, reflecting the owners’ commitment to offering high-quality meals in a warm, friendly atmosphere. The transition from a typical bar to a full-fledged community pub was driven by John and Christina’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment that serves everyone—residents, visitors, and families alike.
Family, Staff, and a Strong Work Culture
Behind every successful business is a dedicated team, and at Brockett Pub, the staff is considered family. John and Christina emphasize that the pub’s longevity and success wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and loyalty of their employees. Long-time staff members such as Just, OJ, and Keyon have played integral roles in shaping the pub’s identity.
“Our staff is part of who we are,” Christina said. “Some of them have been with us for over a decade. That’s not something you see every day in this industry. We’re incredibly proud of the work culture we’ve built here.”
The Ganges credit their staff with creating a welcoming atmosphere where customers feel at ease. They describe Brockett Pub as a “home away from home”—a place where mentorship thrives, and employees are encouraged to grow both personally and professionally.
Navigating Challenges and Overcoming Adversity
Running a business for nearly two decades comes with its share of challenges. From the early days of establishing Brockett Pub to weathering the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, John and Christina have faced numerous hurdles. However, their unwavering commitment to their vision and the support of the Clarkston community have helped them persevere.
During the pandemic, Brockett Pub faced significant uncertainty. Like many small businesses, they had to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. With help from the City of Clarkston’s COVID funding, they were able to make essential improvements and keep the business running. The outpouring of support from local residents also played a crucial role in their survival.
“We wouldn’t have made it through without the community,” John said. “People were buying from us daily, and that support kept us going. It’s something we’ll always be grateful for.”
Another major challenge came in the form of a fire that broke out in a neighboring building. Thanks to the quick response of the nearby fire station, Brockett Pub was spared from disaster. This incident underscored the importance of the close-knit relationships they’ve built with local officials and first responders over the years.
Milestones Worth Celebrating
Despite the challenges, Brockett Pub has achieved numerous milestones that are worth celebrating. This November marks 18 years since they first opened their doors—a testament to their resilience and commitment to the Clarkston community. One particularly unique tradition that sets Brockett Pub apart is their annual July 4th celebration, during which the entire staff receives a paid vacation.
“It’s our way of saying thank you to the team,” Christina explained. “They work incredibly hard, and we want them to know how much they’re appreciated.”
A Hub for Community and Economic Development
Brockett Pub isn’t just a business—it’s a gathering place that brings people together and contributes to the local economy. By hiring locally and fostering a spirit of teamwork, John and Christina have created job opportunities for Clarkston residents while supporting workforce development.
“We love hiring from within the community,” John said. “Clarkston is a special place, and we want to be a part of its growth and development.”
Beyond job creation, Brockett Pub plays a vital role in fostering community engagement. Whether it’s hosting local events, providing a common space for residents, or simply offering a friendly face and a good meal, the pub has become an integral part of Clarkston’s social fabric. The diversity of their clientele reflects the city’s vibrant character, something John and Christina cherish deeply.
“The diversity here is incredible,” Christina said. “It’s one of the things we love most about Clarkston. I’m even learning a new language thanks to our customers!”
Looking to the Future
As they look ahead, John and Christina are focused on continued growth and innovation. They plan to introduce new menu items, enhance their customer experience, and find new ways to give back to the community. Their vision for the future is one of sustainable growth, where Brockett Pub remains a beloved neighborhood institution while contributing to Clarkston’s long-term development.
Their advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in Clarkston is simple but powerful: “Be patient, don’t give up, and hang in there like we did. This is a welcoming community for all. Seek out opportunities, stay hungry for more, and use social media to connect with your audience.”
A Final Thank You
As they reflect on their 18-year journey, John and Christina express deep gratitude to the Clarkston community. “Without you, we wouldn’t be who we are today,” they said. “Thank you for everything.”
Brockett Pub’s story is one of perseverance, family, and community. It serves as a shining example of how small businesses can drive local economic growth while fostering a sense of belonging. Here’s to many more years of success for this beloved neighborhood pub!
