Dear Residents,
We're providing an update on the chemical fire and how it may affect Clarkston and DeKalb County over the coming days.
Important Information:
- On Friday morning, you may notice hazy conditions and a chlorine smell as winds shift and carry smoke from the chemical fire toward our area.
- The smoke is expected to settle near the ground during the night, particularly as the air cools and becomes more stagnant. However, as the day warms up, the air will lift, and the haze and smell should dissipate by the afternoon.
- It's important to know that the chlorine odor does not indicate a health hazard.
Chlorine has a low odor threshold, which means you may smell it at levels far below what could cause harm.
To ensure the continued safety of our residents, DeKalb County is implementing additional air monitoring throughout the day on Friday. These efforts will help confirm that air quality remains safe for everyone in the community.
What You Can Do:
- If possible, limit outdoor activities in the early morning hours, when the haze and smell may be stronger.
- Stay indoors with windows and doors closed during the evening and night when smoke is more likely to settle near the ground.
- If you experience any symptoms, especially if severe (such as difficulty breathing), please seek medical care immediately. For less severe symptoms, call the Georgia Poison Center at 404-856-6252 for advice.
We are committed to keeping you informed as the situation evolves. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please continue to follow updates from the City of Clarkston at www.clarkstonga.gov and DeKalb County officials.
