The City of Clarkston is closely monitoring the recent chemical fire and its potential impact on our community. In coordination with the DeKalb County Office of Emergency Management, we want to ensure that you are informed and prepared for any effects related to the changing wind patterns starting tomorrow night.
Beginning Wednesday evening, winds will shift from east to west, which may result in smoke containing chlorine, chloramine, and other chlorine compounds moving toward the greater Atlanta area, including Clarkston. You may notice a haze and a chlorine-like odor, particularly in the early morning hours from Thursday through Sunday.
Health & Safety Recommendations:
- The chemicals released can irritate the skin, eyes, nasal passages, and respiratory system, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or respiratory sensitivities.
- Limit your outdoor exposure during this period, particularly in the morning hours when the air is most stagnant.
- Keep windows and doors closed and turn off HVAC systems that pull in outdoor air. HVAC systems that recirculate indoor air can remain on.
- N95 masks are not likely to be effective against these compounds, as the particles are smaller than what the mask is designed to filter.
The current levels of chemicals are below thresholds known to cause symptoms for most people. However, some individuals may still experience irritation. Should you develop severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
