Clarkston, GA – November 21, 2024 – The City of Clarkston took a monumental step toward fostering unity and collective responsibility by hosting its inaugural Together for Tomorrow Summit at the Clarkston Community Center. The event was designed to encourage meaningful dialogue, strengthen connections, and create pathways to public safety, mental health awareness, and youth opportunities.

Attendees were greeted with a powerful moment of reflection as they signed a pledge against gun violence, symbolizing their commitment to building a safer Clarkston. Each participant received a button as a token of hope, emphasizing that change starts with collective action.

Cindy Montgomery, the grandmother of Jaherious “Jah” Montgomery, an 18-year-old whose life was tragically lost to gun violence, shared a deeply moving story about her family’s pain and determination to end the cycle of violence. “We can’t afford to lose another child,” she said. “We have to fight for a future where every family feels safe, and no one has to endure this kind of heartbreak.” Her heartfelt plea left the audience visibly moved and inspired to take action.

The Clarkston Police Department delivered a compelling presentation on gun safety, equipping attendees with practical tools to enhance safety in their homes and neighborhoods. Participants were also given T-shirts that read “Stronger Together: Keep Clarkston Safe,” representing the city’s commitment to its new public safety campaign.

Moderated by Councilwoman Yterenickia Bell, the summit featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including Tyshawn Jackson, Esq., Senior Assistant District Attorney for DeKalb County, Reverend James Woodall, Sr., former State President of the Georgia NAACP, Michael Duncan, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Clarkston, and Pastor C.O. Adams, Jr., Founder and Senior Pastor of Christ Community Praise and Worship Center.

The panel discussed the critical issues of youth engagement, mental health, and fostering a culture of nonviolence in the community. Councilwoman Bell opened the summit by emphasizing its importance. “This isn’t just an event. It’s the start of a movement. Together, we’re taking bold steps to create a Clarkston where every resident feels safe, empowered, and supported. Today is about planting seeds of change that will grow into a stronger future, especially for our youth.”

The Together for Tomorrow Summit will now be held quarterly, with the next event scheduled for February. It will continue to serve as a powerful forum for residents to voice concerns, share ideas, and inspire action.

“This is just the beginning,” Bell said. “Our community is stronger when we work together. The vision we’ve started today is one of hope, resilience, and collective responsibility. Together, we can and will keep Clarkston safe.”

As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and unity, ready to champion the cause of public safety and work toward a brighter future for Clarkston.
